The heel turn was, at the time, quite a shock for the WWE Universe as Bayley was one of the most beloved babyfaces on the entire WWE roster, with the crowd often chanting the, now iconic, 'Hey Bayley' song.
Now, following her excellent feud and program with Sasha Banks culminating in Sasha Banks winning the SmackDown Women's Championship, and successfully defending it, Bayley has opened up about why she wanted to turn heel.

In a recent appearance on The New Day: Feel the Power podcast, Bayley explained why she pushed so hard to turn to the dark side.
“I think because I did that (babyface) character for so long, as much as it was me, I felt with my age and what I was doing in my life and where I was in my career, literally growing up starting as a super bubbly babyface, that I was in awe to be there. I was like a little kid with a ponytail. But I felt myself growing up from having these championship matches in NXT, to winning the title in Brooklyn, to being the leader of the locker room once Charlotte, Sasha, and Becky got called up. It was a real gradual growth. It took a couple years, but it was time for a change and I didn’t want to be the same character for the rest of my career." (H/T WrestlingNews )

Many people, myself included, thought that Bayley would reach 'John Cena' levels of popularity and success as an ultra babyface, which makes it funny how she has actually reached those heights as a heel.
Bayley would go on to add that it was her SmackDown Women's Title loss to Charlotte Flair at last year's Hell In a Cell PPV that was the catalyst for her decision to do so, although she added that it was the scariest decision she had made in WWE.
Ultimately, it was a great decision from Bayley and her recent year-long-plus title reign was the most entertaining Bayley has arguably been.
